Which Tesla Models Are Best for Long-Distance Driving?
Public demand for both new and secondhand electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing, but the most important barrier to purchasing an EV for consumers is charging anxiety. However, the Tesla brand has more experience producing luxury electric automobiles than any other automaker, and its expenditures on public charging stations and home charging solutions have won over many EV naysayers. It should come as no surprise that Tesla models hold the records for the longest EV driving range. Let’s take a look at how some of the brand’s vehicles stack up—here’s our recap of which Tesla models are best for long-distance driving.
Model X
The Model X is available in two trim levels: Plaid and Long Range. The Model X is Tesla’s largest car and the larger of the brand’s two SUVs. On a single charge, the Plaid can travel 340 kilometers. Long Range can go a little further; after a full charge, it has a maximum range of 360 miles.
Model Y
All Tesla EVs have shorter ranges than the Model Y, a tiny crossover SUV. It’s also available in two different trim levels: Long Range and Performance. On a full charge, the latter can travel 303 miles, while the Long Range can travel 326 miles. To put things in perspective, the Model Y comes last among Tesla vehicles in terms of range, yet it surpasses most other EVs on the market.
Model 3
The Model 3 sedan is available in three different trim options. As with all Tesla automobiles, the range is the key differential between the trims. The Standard Range Plus is the entry-level model, with a maximum range of 263 miles. The Performance is next, with a range of 315 miles. With a range of 353 miles, the premium Long Range stands true to its name.
Model S
Tesla’s dependable flagship, the Model S, has the longest range. It’s the vehicle that U.S. News recommends over the Porsche Taycan, which is its closest competition. Like the Model X, the Model S is available in two trim levels: Plaid and Long Range. The Plaid trim has a 390-mile maximum estimated range. That’s great, but the Long Range takes the cake: it can travel 412 miles on a single charge, breaking the 400-mile barrier.
