The Difference Between a Grand Tourer and a Sports Car

Site Administrator • Mar 24, 2022

What makes a grand tourer different from a sports car? Sports cars primarily focus on performance, whereas grand tourers have designs that seek to maximize both performance and luxury. While GT cars have distinct characteristics, the term "sports car" is a much broader term that can refer to a wide range of vehicles. Here’s the difference between a grand tourer and a sports car!

What Is a GT Car?

The acronym GT stands for grand tourer, which comes from the Italian term “gran turismo.” Rather than focusing on speed at the expense of comfort or comfort at the expense of capabilities, GT cars prioritize both comfort and performance. The following characteristics are common in GT cars:

  • Seating for two or more people: Most grand tourers have 2+2 seating arrangements, which provide more space than standard supercars or hypercars offer.
  • General functionality: Designers make GT automobiles to be useful in every aspect, allowing the driver to have complete control over the vehicle and its comforts.
  • Enduring engine: Because grand tourers deliver and sustain comfort over long distances and in short sprints, they have engines that can comfortably maintain their top speeds for lengthy periods.

What Is a Sports Car?

True sports vehicles offer high-speed performance and are always low to the ground. Performance, particularly regarding speed and handling, will always be the most important metric for a sports car. Engines with high outputs are the norm. The difficulty with the term “sports car,” though, is that it has a very broad definition. For example, people consider the Ferrari Portofino and the Chevrolet Corvette to be sports cars because they prioritize performance, despite the fact that the Corvette would never be able to keep up with the Ferrari on a racetrack. As a result, most enthusiasts have shifted to more granular terms, such as supercar and hypercar. All supercars and hypercars are legitimately sports cars. However, not all sports cars are supercars or hypercars.

Which One Is Right for You?

When deciding between these two types of cars, you should primarily keep in mind is the usability of the vehicles in your life. Sports cars will often have lower clearances and require flatter roads, making their operation difficult if you ever wanted to go down a dirt road. However, GT cars don’t have quite the speed or responsiveness that many sports cars do. Each type of vehicle is great when used in its own intended realm of operation!
